Circular Economy Pressure Accelerates Flexible Packaging Redesign Across Latin America

MEXICO CITY, MEXICO, September 29, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — Circular economy policies, Extended Producer Responsibility requirements and growing demand for recyclable packaging are changing how flexible packaging is designed, procured, and recovered across Latin America. Against this backdrop, Centre for Management Technology (CMT), with the support of ECOCE A.C., will convene the 3rd Sustainable Flexible Packaging LATAM Conference on 27–28 October 2026 at the Mexico City Marriott Reforma Hotel. Packaging producers, consumer brands, recyclers, material suppliers, technology providers, industry associations, and policymakers will examine practical pathways towards greater circularity without compromising performance, affordability or supply security.

The agenda covers flexible packaging value chain from film design and procurement through product transformation, regulation, recovery and secondary-market development. Event sponsors include ExxonMobil & Lyondell Basell – Advanced Polymer Solutions.

At the material-design stage, Omar Gonzalez, from Oben Group, will examine ultra-thin films, mono-material solutions and bio-based films as routes to minimising regulatory costs while Dr. Gerardo Teran of LyondellBasell – Advanced Polymer Solutions will share insights on Sustainable Packaging Design Solutions: Incorporation of PCR and Development of Monomaterial Structures. The buyer’s perspective will be provided by Massiel del Rio, of Unilever Mexico, who will address the challenge of securing sustainable flexible packaging at scale while balancing circularity with cost, performance and supply reliability.

Regulatory convergence will be tabled by Dr Carlos Ludlow Palafox from Environmental Value UK through a session positioning the European Union’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation as a global benchmark. The discussion will address implementation requirements, alignment of packaging portfolios across markets and lessons for Latin America involving design for recyclability, recycled content and packaging minimisation.

The commercial viability of circular flexible packaging also depends on functioning recovery markets. from AMEE, will explore how circular solutions can extend the value of flexible packaging and move discarded material from waste towards resource.

Implementation will be addressed by Dayana Sabie Naranjo of BF Empaques Flexibles de Mexico (Bioflex), whose session moves the discussion from corporate commitment to practical action. Adrian E. Velasco Jácome, from ECOCE A.C., will examine strategies for the valorisation of flexible plastics in Mexico and the connections required among packaging design, collection, recovery and end markets.

Multilayer flexible packaging presents a different technical challenge. Jade Manzano Kuri, and Roberto Llano, both from Evertis de México, will present delamination as a route for recovering higher-value polymers, considering design implications, commercial deployment and collaboration across the value chain.

The technology discussion extends to label innovation and barrier coatings for mono-material packaging.

On 28 October, the discussion expands into combined sessions with the co-located 22nd LAPET Series – Circular Plastics Packaging LATAM conference. Mexico’s circular economy Law and implementation roadmap will be discussed by Mayra Hernandez Navarro of ECOCE A.C., Luz Elena Aristizábal Alviar of Essity, Dr. German Ruiz Mendez of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT) and Eduardo Solano of NSM Ecosistemas Circulares.

Isabel Bena of Wood Mackenzie provides update on global polyolefins & pet market outlook, while Eduardo Ragasol of NIQ Mexico, shed lights on what consumers really want: data-driven insights shaping the future of packaging in Latin America. Ksenia Portnova of Walmart de México y Centroamérica provides the retailer’s voice of driving circular packaging adoption in Latam’s consumer goods market and Fernando Rosas Garcia of Alpek Polyester Mexico, shares insights on what changes with Mexico’s new circular economy regulatory framework & do we have enough RPET to meet these targets?

Brand-owner panelist will be represented by Juliana Chala Ortega of Mars Mexico, Beatriz Elena De la Pena Lavalle of Coca-Cola FEMSA, Sofia Diaz Rivera of Danone and Frederico L’Abbate of Mondelez International.
