ONTARIO, Calif., Sept. 29, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Travelers at Ontario International Airport (ONT) can now take the guesswork out of waiting for a shuttle, thanks to a new real-time tracking system that shows exactly where airport buses are and when they are expected to arrive.

The new Bus Genius system allows passengers to scan QR codes posted at shuttle stops and throughout the airport to access a live map displaying the location of each shuttle and estimated arrival times. The QR codes also are available at Travelers Aid stations and on flyOntario.com.

“Travel should be as easy and stress-free as possible, and sometimes it’s the seemingly small things that can make a big difference,” said Elisa Grey, senior vice president of revenue management for of the Ontario International Airport Authority (OIAA). “Giving our customers real-time information about where their shuttle is and when it will arrive is another way we’re using technology to create a smarter, more seamless airport experience.”

Each ONT shuttle is equipped with a GPS-enabled tablet that identifies the vehicle within the system and continuously updates its location. The technology also assists shuttle drivers by providing timing information to help regulate departures and reduce “bus bunching,” when multiple shuttles arrive at the same stop at once.

The system was brought to ONT through airport partner PCI after members of ONT’s Parking and Ground Transportation team saw the technology demonstrated earlier this year at the Airport Ground Transportation Association conference in Nashville.

During the pilot phase, ONT will gather feedback and monitor the system’s performance to further refine the passenger experience.

The Bus Genius rollout comes as ONT prepares for a broader modernization of its airport shuttle fleet. The Airport has contracted with U.S.-based bus manufacturer Gillig for four new 40-foot buses designed specifically for ONT, with delivery expected by late 2027. The long-term fleet plan calls for eight electric buses and two compressed natural gas buses to replace existing vehicles.

“Our focus is on creating a ground transportation system that is reliable, efficient and built around the needs of our passengers,” said Valerie Valdez, parking and ground transportation specialist at ONT. “That means investing not only in new vehicles and technology, but in the infrastructure and support needed to keep the system operating at a high level for years to come.”

Gillig was selected following an extensive review that included visits to transportation operations using buses from multiple manufacturers. The company has technicians based in the Inland Empire, providing local support for ONT’s future fleet. Airport staff also are pursuing grant opportunities to help offset the cost of the fleet transition.

The investments are part of ONT’s continuing effort to improve the passenger journey as the airport grows and prepares for its next decade under local ownership.
